Accountability, Uniformity and Time Management

Accountability also reflects the responsibility the unit has over each and every person in the unit. Everyone is required to report for duty so that the commander can verify that he/she has all the unit personnel accounted for.If i don’t show up and nobody notices, the commander reports 100% accountability, but no one notices that i am not physically accounted for, they may find me some time later and be uncertain of what to think because they did not know i was not physically present, which puts the unit and the unit commander at risk for some evasive action. if there are times that i must be late then i should inform someone so that i can be accounted for. Which could also tie in with uniformity. What is the importance of uniformity, dress right dress, and discipline in the army? the importance of uniformity is to make everyone become and look equal. there are no differences between us, no separation because we are all a team. what is the point of uniformity, when a whole pla toon is uniformed it shows accountability, responsibility, discipline and being in uniform is one of the things that is part of the foundation of the army. Without uniformity there cannot be discipline, and then it turns into a chain reaction and destroying the foundation of the army. being in uniformity shows soldiers how they can do things together and how working together, we as people can do anything we want to accomplish. it also teaches soldiers that uniformity also shows responsibility that when things are disorganized nothing ever gets done, but when there are no differences holding back from completing the mission anything can be done 110%. Everything needs discipline in order to be successful and uniformity, not only in dress code allows for working in harmony to get things done right and in a timely manner. Speaking of timeliness, personal time management skills are essential for professional success in any workplace. Those able to successfully implement time management strategies are able to control their workload rather than spend each day in a frenzy of activity reacting to crisis after crisis – stress declines and personal productivity soars! These highly effective individuals are able to focus on the tasks with the greatest impact to them and to the organization, which help to make them more successful in the end then those who have poor time management skills. In writing this essay the importance and purpose of these three words have become clearer to me. We need accountability, uniformity and time management in everything we do in order to be successful and efficient in all things we undergo. Why is a historically significant of US Slavery Essay

Why is a historically significant of US Slavery - Essay Example This is historically significant because it had a long term effect upon the place of black Americans in society right into the mid- 20th century, affecting for instance their rights to vote as full American citizens. Whether or not treatment of Afro-Americans can have ever have been considered humane depends upon your definition of the words ’humane’ and ‘human’. Justifiable Slavery Slavery has been described on more than one occasion as a crime against humanity, 1 but this idea has not always been the prevailing one. When the first Europeans shipped slaves from Africa the practice was already a long established as a norm in society on that continent. The Europeans were merely taking advantage of what was made available to them. Then gradually the trade increased, with traders offering good prices for more and more slaves to work in the newly discovered lands of the New World. It is estimated that some 10 million black Africans were eventually landed and sold on as slaves - this estimate of course does not any account of the massive numbers who died before arrival. It is relatively easy in the early 21st century to believe that slavery is wrong and find it hard to comprehend why people ever thought it was justifiable, especially if one reads the many accounts of the cruelty and horrors which were often involved. It is such stories which tend to stand out, rather than the ones were a slave was an established part of a household and community. There was obvious inequality, unfairness and modern man may feel this was not justified, being unable to fully put themselves into their shoes, but the people of earlier times just did not have the same mind set. Many of those who were slave holders were sincere Christians and could quote the scriptures which apparently backed up their position. This was backed up by their clergy. The Old Testament had laws as to how slaves should be treated e.g. Exodus 21 v 5 which refers to servants who did not want to leave their masters. Deuteronomy 15 v 11 onwards were taken as instructions as how to treat them i.e. pr ovide for them. Verses such as Exodus 21 v 20 were used to justify the beating of slaves. In the New Testament there are verses such as Ephesians 6 v 5 ‘Slaves, obey your earthly masters with respect and fear.’ and Titus 2 v 9 ‘Teach slaves to be subject to their masters in everything.’3 These ideas were not just based upon the Bible, but were generally accepted . Great thinkers such as Aristotle claimed that :- We see what is the nature and office of a slave; he who is by nature not his own but another's man, is by nature a slave; and he may be said to be another's man who, being a human being, is also a possession.4 He does however also say ‘Is not all slavery a violation of nature’, but decides that it is not, on the grounds that some are natural leaders and others naturally subservient. It should be pointed out that this was not racial prejudice, but simply refers to weaker people, perhaps captured in times of war. . Thomas Aquinas, operati ng within a rather different society – one of medieval feudalism, took a similar position – leaders and led.5 Philosopher John Locke in the 17th century was concerned with the way that the British monarchs were treating their people - the British i.e. white people, could not become slaves of the Stuarts he maintained, but on the other hand

The Black Codes and Jim Crow's Laws Legislation Being the Reason for Essay

The Black Codes and Jim Crow's Laws Legislation Being the Reason for the Failure of Reconstruction in the US - Essay Example Racism and the direction of war to contain slavery in the early American society of 1800s saw two opposing sects of the society dragged into historical civil war.The civil war resulted due to the differences that existed between the Southern States and the Northern States concerning the fate and future of the slaves As at the time of this difference, the Northern States underwent rapid periods of industrialization and required labors to work in the industries. The Southern States on the other hand continued to practice plantation farming with the main crop being cotton. The process of working in the cotton farm required intensive labor that provided by the slaves. This explains the difficulty exhibited by the Southerners in releasing the slaves (Winslow 27). The Northerners held firmly and campaigned for the freedom of slaves to ensure their engagement in paying employment. This difference marked the actual start of the civil war with the Southerners seceding and organizing into Conf ederate Armies whiles the Northerners organizing into Union Armies. It was after the civil war of 1861 to 1865, that the Southern States that faced dire economic hardship combined to seek for reunion and reconstruction with the North. The journey to reconstruction particularly begun in 1865 after the end of the Civil war, and characterized with attempts of the Southerners to reconcile up with the North in order to solve political, economical and social problems faced by the individuals states. Reconstruction saw the previously seceded eleven Southern States applying for readmission into the Union (Franklin 64). Now, the North was under the dominance of the Republican legislators who unanimously supported the abolition process of the slaves. This stand invited proposal of firm and strict measures for the Southern States before regaining the admission in the Union. In so doing, the Northern and dominant legislatures approved the Reconstruction Act of 1867 as a basis of compliance for the Southern States before readmission. According to Franklin, the Reconstruction Act 1867 proposed for the establishment of military camps in the South (62). In the Act, Northerners demanded that Southerners accepts, comply and practice the 14th and 15th constitutional amendments before gaining readmission into the Union. The reconstruction process faced numerous impediments and hurdles mainly from the Black Codes and the Jim Crow’s laws. Franklin unravel that the Black Codes and the Jim Crow laws were all destined to disapprove the black race as well as express their inferiority in the societies (65). Black codes in specific were laws formed in 1865 in the Southern States to define the black race. The black codes mainly targeted at encouraging and promoting the supremacy of the white, while consolidating inferiority of the blacks. The black codes were integral strategies of the Southerners to ensure continued supply of cheap labor to work in the plantation firms. Determinat ion of race based on black codes concerned the amount of Negro blood exhibited by given individuals (Franklin 65). In addition, the black code laws protracted blacks as vagrant individuals when they lacked employment and permanent residence. The black code laws allowed for the arrests, fines and or bound for labor when unable to pay fines. Black coding in the Southern America also limited the volume and amount of wealth held by an individual black citizen. The aspects of black coding as introduced by the Southerners restrained blacks from engaging in businesses and some forms of technical trades. The black coding instituted by the Southerners, restricted the slaves and blacks from bearing any form of arm. The black codes also did not allow slaves to assemble without the inclusion of a white. As observed by Franklin, black coding also assisted the Southerners in extending

Introduction to Psychology Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

Introduction to Psychology - Essay Example In the quest then for accurate psychic measurement, methods beyond the law must be considered in the interests of more accurate, useful and meaningful psychic measurement. (Fechner, 1912) Psychophysics: It’s Roots in Fechner and Weber As stated, quantitative scientific study of the relation between stimulus and sensation is, more to the point, the manual manipulation of stimulus properties for the purpose of analyzing perceptual processes of reaction to stimuli. Today, the area of modern psychophysics is seen as applying a whole class of methods evolved over time to the empirical study. Methods, for instance, such as absolute threshold can measure such sensory reactions as a subject’s ability to perceive a dim light in a dark room by manipulating the intensity of the dim light. (Zimbardo et al, 2010). While Gescheider (1997) found that modern applications tend to rely heavily on ideal observer analysis and signal detection theory, the work of Ernst Heinrich Weber and Gu stav Theodor Fechner, particularly Fechner as described in his 1912 treatise, Elemente der Psychophysik, remain the basis of new developmental processes. The classical techniques and theory of psychophysics were formulated by Fechner. Applying laws of physics and mathematics, he took Weber’s basic law of measuring the proportional aspects of stimuli a step further, using logarithmic relation between physical and psychological (or perceived) magnitudes—measuring statistically how individuals actually perceived stimuli, or understood it, in relationship to behavior. In considering the significance and practical consequences of access to such information, Zimbardo et al (2010) offer the example of the usefulness of knowing how loud a fire alarm must be for those inside a building to hear it. This particular example speaks to the importance of the hearing system in determining the impact of stimuli; the former example of perceiving a dim light in a dark room speaks to the visual system, which we focus on for the purpose of analyzing its importance to the measurement of stimuli and its effect. The Visual System The visual system as related to sensory reception is perhaps the most studied of all methods. Simplified, the eye gathers light, focuses it, and sends signals to the brain. For instance, Zimbardo et al (2010) found that color is literally created through neural processes of the brain as it interprets information from the original source. Hecht (1924) in his study of visual discrimination similarly found that sensory determination in changes of brightness and in discriminatory thresholds versus original light intensity can be calculated by mathematical formulas. These formulas over time, evolved and were incorporated into the Weber-Fechner law, combining â€Å"Weber’s Law that over a large dynamic range, and for many parameters, the threshold of discrimination between two stimuli increases linearly with stimulus intensity...[and Fechnerà ¢â‚¬â„¢s work] showed [ing] how Weber’s law could be accounted for by postulating that the external stimulus is scaled into a logarithmic internal representation of sensation† (Dehaene, 2003:146). Using information on the magnitude of star light and its ratio to intensity, Fechner (1860) was able to determine the relation between the two, and as suggested by Hecht (1924), thus developed the idea that this relationship produces a human threshold sensation leading to the perception of varying degrees of light.

Tiger Woods sex scandal Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2250 words

Tiger Woods sex scandal - Research Paper Example His career comprises of a series of records in the history of sports. The player has a record of winning 14 major titles until the end of 2009. The number of titles suggests him to be just behind Jack Nicklaus in the international golf arena. By that time the player had already accomplished a great hype which was indeed the gift of his achievements accumulated with the strength of media. As highlighted in an article published by BBC, â€Å"As the most successful black player in a traditionally white sport, Woods has been credited with boosting interest in the game worldwide, increasing TV audiences, and bringing greater wealth to the sport in prize money and sponsorship†. Source: (BBC, â€Å"Tiger Woods Profile†) Tiger Woods is an American and was born on 30th December, 1975. The boy was named ‘Eldrick Woods’ by his parents and later got the nickname ‘Tiger’ after one of his father’s Vietnamese soldier friends. And thereby he received hi s fame name as ‘Tiger Woods’. Tiger Woods received publicity for the first time on television as a ‘child golf prodigy’ when he was only two years old against Bob Hope. He also earned the fame of making 48 strikes in 9 holes at the age of three. This provided him the fame of the most promising youngster in golf. After this he became a common face in the national and international sports channels on television and a common figure in the sports news (BBC, â€Å"Tiger Woods Profile†). With all these on-going phenomena, within a short span of time, Woods achieved the fame which takes years for other players. Hence, media played a significant role to brighten up the career of Tiger Woods. On the contrary, media is often referred to be the reason of his downfall as well. The problem occurred when the focus of the media publications shifted from his career and achievements to his personal life. It was in the month of October in 2004 when Tiger Woods married Elin Nordegren by organizing a lavish marriage ceremony of almost $3 million. Again highlighted by the media this became one of the attractive news headlines during the period (CNN, â€Å"Woods Marries His Swedish Fiancee†). In the first few years, the couple was happily married until the end of 2009 when suddenly the extra-marital affairs caught the attention of the majority of the world. It was in December 2009, when a news media highlighted that Tiger Woods had multiple extra-marital affairs after his marriage to Elin Nordegren in 2004. This resulted in the separation of the couple forcing the magnificent golf player to take a personal leave from sports (Nadler, R. S., â€Å"Leading with Emotional Intelligence: Hands-On Strategies for Building Confident and Collaborative Star Performers†). The scandal has been rated to be a series of few small and big catastrophes related to the renowned player, within a span of just two week from November 27th to December 11th. To be summarized, it was on November 27th when Woods met with an accident within a short distance from his residence, which attracted a few media conversations. As a result, on November 30th, the player pulled himself from the Chevron World Challenge. He also had to pay $164 as a penalty for careless driving at the Florida Highway Patrol on December 1st (Telegraph, â€Å"

Parental education Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

Parental education - Essay Example The failure of many adults to succeed is rooted in the poor parenting skills of those who raised them, thus suggesting that required parental education would benefit society as a whole. A society has the right and the obligation to define how its members will interact within the ideological framework of its culture. One of the biggest problems in the United States is that most people do not have generations of ancestors who came before them on which to base their cultural belief systems. Therefore, the way in which parents pass their heritage to their children is often convoluted and without social structure, the design of the community not based upon generations of cultural belief systems, but a patchwork of concepts that do not inform those who are trying to find a way to raise their children on exactly what is best in regard to their future. As witnessed in the disrupted families within the two parallel stories of Wes Moore, when the struggle to survive creates a gap between what is life and what one thinks life should be, the frustration can lead children to some very poor decisions that can impact the rest of their lives. Because of the gaps that leave many children struggling to acculturate within their own native society, the concept of parent education is one way that this social problem can be combated. The difficulty, however, is that parenting is a complex activity that is comprised of a number of roles and a wide path of responsibilities. According to Chase-Lansdale and Pittman, list the number of functions of a parent as including â€Å"nurturing, discipline, stimulation, values, activities, and routines† (167). In the process of promoting good parenting skills within those who were at a socio-economic level to receive state assistance for their families, parenting classes have been a part of the reforms. Chase-Lansdale and Pittman have concluded that programs with generous work supports and flexible work requirements have lead to different choices within the family and have promoted, not only better parenting skills, but more stable marriages and less violence between partners which has lead to overall natural better parenting (167). The following factors in the methods of parenting have been instrumental in creating children who make better life choices: warmth and responsiveness, control and discipline, cognitive stimulation, modeling, gate keeping, and family routines and traditions (Chase-Lansdale and Pittman 168). The characteristics of a parent are central to the way in which the parent will provide positive examples of these factors. Chase-Lansdale and Pittman state that â€Å"Single mothers tend to have less positive interactions with their children and provide less firm and consistent discipline as compared with mothers in two-parent households†¦primarily because single mothers have more stressors in their lives† (171). This suggests that parents who are experiencing high levels of stress are not as capable of focusing their positive life experience on their children. According to Carlson and Tanner, parents are the â€Å"primary socialization agents for children†, thus the way a parent approaches life will be passed down to children,

The Development and Growth in Sports and Physical Activities in Research Paper

The Development and Growth in Sports and Physical Activities in Britain - Research Paper Example The success of British sports in promoting justice can be credited to John Raws. Contextually, the concept of social justice in Britain reached at its height with the publication of ‘A Theory of Justice’ narrated by John Rawls. In his book, he argued on the complexity of traditional theory of justice and proposed his own principles. The principles postulated by him stated that each person should have equal rights to the most extensive basic liberties which should comprise compatible similar liberty for all irrespective of any race, ethnic origin, religion and colour. Furthermore, he added that social and economic equalities should be drawn in such a way that yields the greatest benefits to every individual or group (Wolff, 2012). Spracklen & et. al. (2006) stated that despite the considerable efforts and attention to racial equality over the last few years, the progress towards creating equality has not been much fruitful in the UK. The principles stated by John Rawls do not seem to be in practice in a modern day sports context. At the same time, it is also being argued that approaches initiated in the UK for promoting social equality failed to acknowledge views related with gender equality and social consequences which ultimately discouraged the support of sports opportunities for women and girls (Right to Play, 2010). Formal, radical and liberal equality all has been placed for promoting equality in society. The broad three aspects of equality vary in certain ways. In relation to this, formal equality is based on the rule of laws that advocates equality without making any discrimination.
